Different Stages of Coma in Elderly
In such a state, elderly people experience inhibited reaction, weakness, confusion, or, conversely, develop psychomotor agitation. There may be difficulties in the working of the internal organs according to the characteristics of the disease that caused the onset of coma in an elderly person.
First Stage of Coma
The patient begins to develop deafness. An elderly person in a coma of this degree is able to swallow liquid food and perform simple movements, but it becomes quite difficult to establish contact with the patient. Reflex reactions are inhibited or overestimated depending on the type of coma.
Second Stage of Coma
In such a condition, the patient has a deep sleep, sometimes uncontrolled movements of the limbs occur, contact is impossible. In an elderly person in a coma, pathological noisy breathing, arrhythmia, involuntary emptying of the bladder and bowel are observed. Reflex and pupillary reactions are absent, skin sensitivity does not manifest.
Third Stage of Coma
Patients lack consciousness, pain sensitivity, and reflex reactions. An elderly person in a coma has a decrease in body temperature, poor respiration and a drop in blood pressure.
Forth Stage of Coma
Patients are diagnosed with a complete impairment of consciousness, lack of reflex reactions and muscle tone, a decrease in body temperature and blood pressure, and sudden stops in the respiratory movements, which require the patient to be connected to a ventilator.
The chances of recovering from coma in older people depend on the degree of brain damage. In medical science, the probability of getting out of this condition is as follows: in precoma and first stage of coma, complete rehabilitation without any consequences is possible; for the second and third stages of coma – there is a high probability of both recovery and death; while for the last stage of coma, there may be high probability of death.
The main cause of deaths during coma in the elderly are major diseases like diabetes or cardiovascular ailments. Also, timely medical care and the selection of the right drugs play a key role in rehabilitation. A rather simple therapy is often prescribed to an elderly person in a coma due to the high cost of medications since patients at this age do not always have the opportunity to pay for all necessary medications.
